Description:

Exploring Transition-age Services for DeafBlind Youth will focus on what transition services are currently available for DeafBlind youth and possible approaches that may be implemented for a successful transition. The presentation will include the story and perspective of an individual with deafblindness.

Presenter, John Filek, M.Ed., is the Helen Keller Regional Services Coordinator for the North Central Region including IL, MN, WI, OH, IN, and MI. John served as Director of Programs at Vision Loss Resources in MN for the past six years managing three state and grant-funded programs - Rehabilitation Services, Community Services and DeafBlind Services Minnesota. Prior to that, he was Program Manager of the DeafBlind Services Minnesota’s Children, Youth and Family Services Program for 15 years.

Learning Objectives Participants will understand:
1. What transition services are for DeafBlind youth
2. What successful transition services look like utilizing an interdisciplinary team approach
3. What is a perspective of transition services from a DeafBlind person
4. What the Helen Keller National Center can offer for transition services
