Universal Design for Learning (UDL)

Overview

 
 
Universal Design for Learning (UDL) is a framework based on cognitive neuroscience that improves and optimizes teaching and learning for all learners. Effective use of the UDL framework activates the three networks of the brain needed for learning to take place. These networks are the Recognition Networks, the Strategic Networks, and the Affective Networks, which inform the three Principles of UDL: Multiple Means of Engagement, Multiple Means of Representation, and Multiple Means of Action and Expression. 
 

Affective Networks: The WHY of Learning

To activate the Affective Network, use Mulitple Means of Engagement.  
 
The Principal of Engagement includes three main areas: 
             1. Recruiting Interest
             2. Sustaining effort & persistence 
             3. Self Regulation 
 Each of these should be included in multiple ways. 
 
The UDL Guidelines include checkpoints in each area that offer more details for achieving this principal and ultimately creating Expert Learners who are purposeful and motivated. 

Recognition Networks: The WHAT of Learning

To activate the Recognition Network, use Mulitple Means of Representation.  
 
The Principal of Represenation includes three main areas: 
             1. Perception
             2. Language, Expressions, and Symbols
             3. Comprehension 
 Each of these should be included in multiple ways. 
 
The UDL Guidelines include checkpoints in each area that offer more details for achieving this principal and ultimately creating Expert Learners who are resourceful and knowledgeable. 

Strategic Networks: The HOW of Learning

To activate the Strategic Network, use Mulitple Means of Action and Expression.  
 
The Principal of Action and Expression includes three main areas: 
             1. Physical Action 
             2. Expression and Communication  
             3. Executive Functioning  
 Each of these should be included in multiple ways. 
 
The UDL Guidelines include checkpoints in each area that offer more details for achieving this principal and ultimately creating Expert Learners who are Strategic and Goal Directed.
